Teenagers are becoming overweight due to lack of physical activity from sports. Studies show that if middle school students play sports their average grade point is 3.151 and students who don’t do sports their average grade point is at a 2.4 grade.
Participation in sports requires them to work as a team and be persistent in order to succeed. They tend to be sensitive to criticism, self-conscious, loyal to peers, and more motivated by social factors than by academic concerns.
The National Centers of Disease Control recommend 30 minutes of jogging or less to promote healthy joints, bones and muscles to control weight.
The long-term effects of inadequate physical activity can include obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
It is important that they build active habits instead of spending their free time watching television, playing video games or using a computer.
Youth sports participation also reduces the likelihood that teens will eventually drop out of school and increases their chances of attending college.
