Staying active is one of the most important ways to stay healthy, especially for teens. Teenagers have been less and less active every year. 28% of teens are physically inactive in the U.S. Here are some ways to stay physically and mentally fit throughout the year.

The first thing is to start by doing things you love. Exercising doesn’t always have to be push-ups and sit-ups. You could exercise daily playing your favorite sport, or even just walking your dog for 30 minutes.

“Students aren’t staying active because of the new technology; like phones, TV, and all that other stuff,” Hawk PE teacher Kyle Janssen said.

The second thing is to take it one step at a time. If you just start by running for 3 minutes, you could build your way up to eventually 10-12 minutes and keep going from there. As long as you warm up before, you will get the exercise you need.

“I find that stretching helps me be more active, and I’m not in as much pain after I stretch,” 8th grader Haylee Hodges said.

The final thing is to stay positive and have fun. Scientists have proven that if students tell themselves they are having fun, it is more likely that they will believe themselves and have a good time. So make sure you stay fit and exercise daily.
