The Sierra journalism program has won seven state and national awards this fall, including two Picture of the Year Honorable Mentions, Adviser of the Year Award, and second place in Colorado High School Press Association (CHSPA)  Best of Show for Yearbook.

The 2013 Eagle Eye View Yearbook won a Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) Gold Medal award, a National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) All-American and a CHSPA All-Colorado award. The book was praised by all the judges and scored a 999/1000 in the photography portion of the NSPA critique.

The Eagle Eye View also won 2nd place Best in Show at the CHSPA state convention. This is the second year that The Eagle Eye View has won this award. Sierra journalism adviser Jed Palmer said, “I was very surprised because we were up against all of the 3A and 4A high schools in the state.”

Palmer earned the Colorado Journalism Adviser of the Year from CHSPA. The award was given at J-Day 2013 at Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch. Palmer is  the first ever middle school adviser to win. “I was absolutely stunned. This is probably the most important award for me in the field of journalism.”

The yearbook staff had two national Picture of the Year finalists: Alexandra Merrill and Connor Chase. Merrill is in eighth grade and Chase is a freshman at Regis High School. “The best part is just being recognized. Having the photo go all the way to the National Scholastic Press Association is a really big thing,” Chase said.

Both photographers received Honorable Mention awards at the NSPA national convention in Boston, MA and were recognized by the Douglas County School Board on November

“Other than being completely taken off guard, I’m glad to represent Sierra because I really enjoyed going (to school) there,” Chase said.
