On May 3, Sierra student, Josh Hoekendorf on Team Falcon, received the Best of Colorado Breaking News Coverage award for first place. Hoekendorf is the Sierra Summit Online Editor In Chief, and he has been part of the staff for two years.

This award began in 2010 and has been around since then. Submissions to the contest for this year were taken between March 20 through April 12. Hoekendorf’s story, “Maupin’s Fifth Period Set Fire Near Sierra,” was submitted by Journalism Advisor, Jed Palmer. This piece was posted to the Sierra Summit on March 16 as breaking news.

Hoekendorf was competing in the 850-1,700 students category in middle schools and high schools across Colorado.

“I’m surprised that I actually got it. I’ve never thought my writing was that great. I was definitely surprised that my story beat some high schoolers,” said Hoekendorf.
This is the first time a Sierra student has won the Breaking News Coverage category for Best of Colorado.
