Students at Sierra should have PE as a year long class. Teenagers should be getting 60 minutes of exercise, but all of the classes are only 55 minutes. WODs  (workout of the day) take up to 20 minutes each class period, leaving only 30 minutes to learn about different games and activities.

Some units like Basketball or Volleyball are only 2 to 3 days, but they could be stretched out to about a week and a half if PE was year long. Most times there could be extra time at the end of each unit to stretch them out even more. Running the mile and other fitness tests could also be stretched further apart from each other, which some students would really like.

A group of researchers from Harvard School of Public Health found that one out of every four parents (25%) said that their child’s school doesn’t emphasize PE enough. They also stated that middle and high school students should be getting 225 minutes per week. Sierra students only get 120 minutes, because of the block day. Parents also feel like PE is just as important as Math and English classes, and they feel like PE should be just as long as core classes.

The complaints about PE can be fixed if PE was a year long class, because then the students have more time to be active, and parents wouldn’t be as concerned about their child’s health. PE teachers would also feel better about their classes when parents aren’t constantly emailing them about their students.

We can’t fix how much students are active throughout the week without changing the whole schedule. But we can change how much students are active in the long run, such as for a year or two years. Student health rates would get better at our school if PE was a year long class.

According to Ohio State University Research Program, nearly 81% of middle school students participate more in PE when it is year long versus semester long. That means students will not only have more time to be active, but they will also want to participate, which helps a lot with health issues.

PE should be a year long class. It gives students more time to learn different sports, games, and it also helps get students to participate in the activities. This can solve some of the health issues that are growing in America.
