Bullying is unwanted and repetitive behavior that can happen anywhere, including Sierra Middle School. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, over 1 out of every 5 students report that they are being bullied.

There are three types of bullying. Verbal bullying includes saying hurtful things to others. Social bullying involves hurting someone’s feelings, relationships, or reputation. Lastly, physical bullying involves hurting a person’s body or possessions. Typically, bullies use their power such as popularity or embarrassing information to target people.

The effects of bullying can lead to very serious concerns. Kids who are bullied are at a higher risk of having depression and anxiety. This can cause suicidal thoughts, changes in eating and sleeping patterns, and feeling of loneliness. It is well known for students to make excuses in order to stay home from school due to bullying. This is why bullies need to be more aware of the problems they are causing.

Overall, bullying just makes students feel insecure and unsafe. Schools need to make a bigger effort to put bullying to an end.
